What is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused by an infection in the vaginal or uterine tract caused by Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria.
How common is it?
Chlamydia infection has recently become very common, especially among young adults and teenagers. It is thought that around 20% of young women may have a Chlamydia infection.
What are the symptoms of Chlamydia?
However, about 75% of women and 50% of men with Chlamydia have no symptoms of infection.
In women, untreated Chlamydia can spread into the pelvic area and infect the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries leading to pelvic inflammatory disease, a serious infection. It is also a major cause of cervicitis, urethritis, and endometriosis in women. This is a worry because an infection can cause sterility. How is it treated?
Once it has been diagnosed, Chlamydia can easily be treated and cured with antibiotics.
